Saint John School of Radiation Therapy

The Bachelor of Health Science Radiation Therapy Degree is a joint program offered by Horizon Health Network, University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) and CancerCare Manitoba's (CCMB) University of Winnipeg School of Radiation Therapy. It is a four-year program combining various components including classroom learning, simulated scenarios and real clinical experiences.

The program consists of:

  • School Radiation Therapy 1a 34-month, full-time program in radiation therapy
  • one year of post-secondary university studies are prerequisites to Year 2
  • Year 2 is spent between Saint John, NB and Winnipeg, MB
  • completion of Years 3 and 4 of the Bachelor of Health Sciences Radiation Therapy program offered through UNB

During Year 2, UNB students will be required to study in Winnipeg joining the classes with other students from Manitoba. Annually, the average class size is 6 to 8 students, with four to six of these from Manitoba, and two from New Brunswick.

Courses in this competency-based program include concepts and theories behind:

  • radiation therapy (including physics, radiation biology and protection and imaging)
  • patient care and professional practice

In clinical placements students get hands-on experience working side-by-side with practicing radiation therapists to learn the skills and attitudes required to be successful in this career.
