Research Overview

The Stan Cassidy Centre is an active site for local, national and international clinical studies involving persons who have neurological and neuromuscular injuries and diseases. Research includes trialing new medications in both Blinded and Open Label studies, and treatments and measurements of spasticity, mobility and pain. Studies are carried out by our research team on Site and in collaboration with the UNB Biomedical Engineering Department. 

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) CyclingResearch Committee

The Research Committee at the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation includes professionals in a variety of disciplines, including Physiatry, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Nursing. Meeting once a month, the Research Committee provides support for staff initiated projects as well as start-up funds and research dissemination. The Research Committee at SCCR has collaborated with external organizations, such as the Rick Hansen Institute and the University of New Brunswick Institute for Biomedical Engineering, to produce research in many areas pertinent to neurological rehabilitation.

Recent and Current Studies

  • Open label study using Fampridine (study drug) for persons who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and have difficulty with ambulation
  • Quality of Life Study - This is a multinational study looking at measuring quality of life across different cultures in persons with ALS.
  • BIOTONE:  Validation of a Tool Kit to measure Spasticity in persons with neuromuscular injury or disease
  • National Feasibility Study for the use of an Internet Clinic for the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers in persons with spinal cord injuries (funded by the Rick Hansen Institute)
  • National study on using functional electrical stimulation for upper limb recovery following spinal cord injury (funded by the Rick Hansen Institute)
  • National Registry for Spinal Cord Unjury to assist in clinical care and research (funded by the Rick Hansen Institute)
  • iPad2 study will involve inpatient research looking at the Feasibility of using an iPad2 at the bedside to demonstrate patient transfers betweent he therapist and nursing staff.

  • Evaluation of FES-Cycling on Spasticity in SCI


SCCR researchers have presented results of their work at National and International meetings, such as:
