What is Family Medicine?

Family Medicine physicians specialize in providing primary health services in the community and hospital setting to patients of all age groups with a wide variety of medical conditions.

The Family Medicine service supports and is supported through consultation by all secondary and tertiary services.  Secondary care is general surgery, internal medicine pediatrics, psychiatry and such. Tertiary care is advanced specialty care such as nephrology, neuro oncology and heart surgery. Some Family Medicine physicians provide secondary services such as geriatric medicine, palliative care and emergency care.

In addition, Family Medicine support is provided to the prison system, addiction services, ambulatory care clinics and in the patient's home through the Extra -Mural Program.
