Public Health’s New Breastfeed Anywhere Campaign

(Miramichi) October 26, 2015 - A new campaign to normalize breastfeeding in public places will launch this fall. As part of the campaign, Public Health will place life-sized images of local breastfeeding mothers in various locations in Miramichi, Neguac, Rogersville, Blackville and Baie-Sainte-Anne areas. To show support for the initiative, the public is encouraged to take photos (selfies) with the images and share to social media at #BreastfeedHereNB.

The goal of the campaign is to help normalize breastfeeding in public places. Breastfeeding is the normal way to feed a baby. Although women have a right to Breastfeed Anywhere, some mothers are criticized for doing so, or asked to "cover up" or leave. Changing attitudes and perceptions about breastfeeding in public will help to make breastfeeding the social norm.

The majority of women in New Brunswick begin breastfeeding, however, very few continue as long as recommended. Studies show breastfeeding is beneficial to both baby and mother, including: providing valuable antibodies to the baby preventing disease, while reducing the risk of developing allergies; and for the mother it provides a measure of protection against breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and osteoporosis.

Please join us on Monday, October 26th at 10:30 am as we launch the Breastfeed Anywhere Campaign in the Council Chamber at Miramichi City Hall, 141 Henri Street, Miramichi.
