New awareness campaign helps reduce childhood obesity

(Miramichi) October 3, 2016 - A new initiative to help reduce childhood obesity and raise healthy children is about to launch in Northumberland County. The 5-2-1-0 A Way of Life initiative is planned for Tuesday, October 4 at 1 p.m. at the Natoaganeg School, 11 Riverview Road East, Eel Ground.

Health advice can be confusing and at times overwhelming. The 5-2-1-0 slogan simplifies this information into four simple messages:

  • Enjoy - 5 or more fruits and vegetables per day

  • Power down - No more than 2 hours of screen time each day

  • Move more - At least 1 hour of physical activity everyday

  • Drink more water - 0 sugar added beverages

The committee leading this initiative was created in the fall of 2015 after a research project by the Université de Moncton and Miramichi Public Health indicated high rates of obesity for babies and toddlers. The committee then decided to adopt the 5-2-1-0 message used by many U.S. states and the province of British Columbia as a way to build healthy communities.

Everyone has a role to play in promoting and supporting healthy lifestyle, as well as joining forces to create workplaces, schools, daycares and communities where it is easy make healthy choices.
