The New Brunswick Heart Centre celebrates the opening of renovated Cardiac Units at the Saint John Regional Hospital

(Provincial) November 23, 2016 - Horizon Health Network and the New Brunswick Heart Centre celebrated the opening of the renovated Coronary Intensive Care and Cardiac Stepdown Units at the Saint John Regional Hospital. The units will be fully operational beginning Thursday, December 1, 2016.

"The Government of New Brunswick is proud to have invested $3.1 million in capital equipment funding for the upgrade of the cardiac units at the New Brunswick Heart Centre," said Health Minister Victor Boudreau. "As the provincial centre of excellence, the New Brunswick Heart Centre plays an integral role in our health care system, not only here in the Saint John region but for our entire province. These upgrades will improve patient experience and ensure that staff can continue to offer the highest quality cardiac care possible."

The $6-million project features a state-of-the-art Electrophysiology Suite designed to improve access for patients requiring complex pacemaker and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) insertions, as well as electrophysiology procedures. Electrophysiology studies the electrical activity of the heart to determine where an arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) is coming from. The suite includes an imaging chain and hemodynamic system with enhanced monitoring capabilities that provide clearer imaging and more precise details about the electrical pathways of the heart. This advanced technology allows for a wider range of treatment options for patients experiencing irregular heartbeats due to abnormal electrical pathways.

Combined, the units have 30 inpatient beds, one family room offering enhanced privacy, and one waiting room to provide comfort for our patients' partners-in-care - a place that enables them to stay close with their loved ones. With support from the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, this project received new furnishings and technology at a value of over $110,000.

"I'm appreciative to our partners, the Department of Health and the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, for their contribution in moving this exceptional project forward, and for their shared passion in putting the patient first," said John McGarry, President and CEO, Horizon Health Network. "It's partnerships and enhancements like this that transform the way health care is delivered through our hospitals and facilities - all of us working together to provide exceptional care, every person, every day."

The New Brunswick Heart Centre Program supports over 17,000 clinic visits each year through various services. Per year, the centre performs over 4,000 interventional cardiology procedures, 800 cardiac surgery procedures, and over 500 electrophysiology and device procedures.

"The New Brunswick Heart Centre is the provincial referral centre for adult cardiac carefor New Brunswick and most of Prince Edward Island, and is recognized as one of the leading cardiac centres in Canada," said Dr. Vernon Paddock, Medical Director, New Brunswick Heart Centre. "Our team is committed to providing exceptional care to our patients, and we are excited to work in such a modern environment and deliver the highest quality cardiovascular care possible."

The New Brunswick Heart Centre (NBHC) is located in the Saint John Regional Hospital, which is part of Horizon Health Network. The NBHC has been in operation since April 1991, and is the provincial referral centre for adult cardiac care in New Brunswick and surrounding areas. Services currently provided at the NBHC include general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and cardiovascular surgery. The New Brunswick Heart Centre works in partnership with the Provincial health authorities to provide excellence in cardiac care along the entire patient care continuum.
