FREDERICTON (GNB) - The provincial government announced today that Fredericton will be the demonstration site for introducing midwives into the health-care system.

"Your government is listening to New Brunswickers and I am pleased we are moving forward with our commitment of maximizing the use of health professionals, including midwives," said Health Minister Victor Boudreau. "Midwives are primary-care providers who can provide safe and high-quality care for New Brunswick families."

The Horizon Health Network will manage the midwifery demonstration site. A lead midwife will assist in the development of policies and procedures that will ensure that midwifery practice will begin within an organized and supportive system. Three additional midwives will then be recruited for this demonstration site. The job posting for lead midwife will be posted in the next week.

"For children to get the right start in life, expectant mothers need access to effective pre and post-natal care as well as labour and birth support," said Geri Geldart, vice-president, Clinical at Horizon Health Network. "With the establishment of the demonstration site, New Brunswick families will be able to access another option for maternity care."

Midwives will give New Brunswick families more options when it comes to making important choices around pregnancy and childbirth. Midwives can provide comprehensive care during normal, low-risk pregnancies, labour, postpartum care, as well as the newborn period.

Registered midwives working in New Brunswick will be regulated by the Midwifery Council of New Brunswick.
