N.B. Doctors Cycling Against Cancer begin their five-day cycle

(HORIZON) June 19, 2017 - The third annual N.B. Doctors Cycling Against Cancer event has officially begun. The physician-led team of cyclists began their five-day cycle this morning, leaving from Horizon Health Network's Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic at The Moncton Hospital (TMH) at 9:00 a.m.

"This year we set an ambitious goal of $55,000," said Dr. Mohammed Harb, Medical Oncologist and event founder. "The funds we collect will go directly towards improving the care of our patients. They inspire us every day and this is our small way of giving back."

Executive Director of The Moncton Hospital, Nancy Parker, congratulated the cyclists on their dedication.  "Your commitment to the community and your patients is commendable," she said. "Our patients and hospital are fortunate to have such a hardworking team of physicians who truly go above and beyond."

In the first two years, donations far exceeded expectations and close to $100,000 was raised. The outpouring of support from the community inspired the cyclists to continue the event and aim for a higher goal. All proceeds from the fundraiser will help enhance patient care at the Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic.

"The big ticket item we are raising funds for this year is a piece of equipment that will help surgeons find sentinel nodes in breast cancer patients, allowing them to detect whether the cancer has spread beyond the primary tumour into the lymphatic system," said Dr. Tooraj Shakerinia, cyclist and General Surgeon. "This technique will spare the patient from needing a bigger operation and will certainly improve the overall outcome for our patients."

The 11 cyclists began their five-day journey at The Moncton Hospital and will visit two other Horizon locations along their route. They will depart from the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton on Wednesday, June 21 at 9:00 a.m. and depart from the Miramichi Regional Hospital Thursday, June 22 at 9:00 a.m.

While on route the past two years, the cyclists heard moving stories from New Brunswickers who have been touched by cancer. These stories motivate the cyclists to keep going and continue their quest to help cancer patients.
