Horizon Health Network welcomes new Thoracic Surgeons

Horizon Health Network (Horizon) welcomes the arrival of two new thoracic surgeons to its surgical team. A partnership between Horizon, the New Brunswick Medical Society and the Government of New Brunswick was instrumental in bringing the two new thoracic surgeons to Horizon.

The two new hires, along with the return of two thoracic surgeons previously on leave means Horizon's thoracic surgical services are now fully staffed.

"We understand the importance of a full complement of thoracic surgeons working in our province," said Dr.  Serge Melanson, Chief of Staff at The Moncton Hospital. "This is not something we take lightly. The recruitment of two new surgeons will help patients have more access to services. This is a step in the right direction."

Dr. Smarika Shrestha began working at The Moncton Hospital earlier this summer and Dr. Julius Poon began working at the Saint John regional Hospital in early September.  Their skills and expertise will help provide Horizon patients with the care they need, close to home.

"Horizon is pleased with the successful hiring process of two highly-specialized surgeons," said Dr.  Édouard Hendriks, Vice President Medical, Academic and Research. "Horizon attracts quality physicians, trained throughout the world. This is something we would like to see continue to grow."

Thoracic surgery is the branch of surgery that treats the structures of the chest with the exception of the heart. A thoracic surgeon is trained in the surgical treatment of the esophagus, lungs, chest muscle and the diaphragm muscle. Thoracic surgeons treat lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and other diseases of the chest.
