Highlighting Horizon’s community partners at work

(Horizon) March 26, 2019 - Students in two rural areas now have access to nutritious meals every day thanks to a collaboration among community partners to provide food security.

The acquisition of two commercial fridges has given Port Elgin Regional School the ability to host a daily breakfast program. In Nackawic, the Nackawic and Area Wellness Committee and culinary students at Nackawic High School teamed up to provide lunches to the Nackawic middle and elementary schools.

These are just two of the stories featured in the sixth edition of In Your Community: Community Health Needs Assessments in Action. This publication highlights the achievements stemming from Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) recommendations across Horizon Health Network. This edition features stories from the Tantramar Area and the Nackawic, Harvey, McAdam, Canterbury Area.

Karen McGrath, President and CEO of Horizon Health Network, said working with community partners is important because health care is about more than just health services.

"These communities are addressing the determinants of health and finding ways to deliver food security, mental resiliency and coping skills, mental health and addictions services, and supports for struggling families," said McGrath. "CHNAs have been an invaluable way for Horizon to engage with communities and address their health and wellness priorities."

Jean Daigle, VP Community with Horizon Health Network, said CHNA priorities cannot be addressed without the partnership between health-care providers and community partners.

"The relationship we have with our community partners is integral to helping people be healthy," said Daigle. "I'm so proud of the work being done in all communities across Horizon to address the unique needs of the people who live there, and In Your Community showcases that work."
