PSA: Temporary Closure of Emergency Department at Horizon’s Sackville Memorial Hospital

(SACKVILLE) February 13, 2020 - The Emergency Department at Horizon's Sackville Memorial Hospital (SMH) will temporarily close on Friday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m. and re-open on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 8 a.m.

Due to a physician shortage, the Emergency Department will not be seeing patients and clients during this night shift and ambulances will be diverted to other hospitals.

All patients and clients requiring urgent medical care will need to seek treatment at another hospital.

As always, patients who have a medical emergency should call 911.

Patients can call Tele-Care 811 if they have any questions about the type of medical attention they need.

In recent months, there has been at least one confirmed occasion where the closure of this Emergency Department was imminent because of physician shortages. This the first occasion where physician coverage could not be found.

In the coming weeks, up to eight (8) overnight shifts at this Emergency Department do not have physician coverage. If coverage is not found for these dates, the Emergency Department will again need to temporarily close.

Horizon  recently announced that as of March 11, the Emergency Department at SMH will operate 8 a.m. to midnight, 16 hours a day, seven days a week, with the last patient being accepted before 10 p.m.

Horizon is committed to ensuring safe and quality care for our patients and clients, and we apologize for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause.
