Changes to Physician Privileges

(SAINT JOHN) February 6, 2013 - Dr. Alan Cockeram, gastroenterologist, has been working in the Saint John area for more than 25 years.

In June 2012, Horizon Health Network (Horizon) was made aware that a charge involving sexual assault had been filed against Dr. Cockeram for an incident that occurred within his private office.

At that time, Horizon Health Network took immediate steps to ensure patients receiving care in our hospitals were safe and protected. Safety measures were implemented to ensure Dr. Cockeram did not treat any female patients without another staff member in attendance.

On February 5, we were made aware that the Saint John Police have laid an additional eight counts of sexual assault against Dr. Cockeram. All eight charges relate to separate alleged incidents that occurred within his private office, which is under the jurisdiction of the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Though Dr. Cockeram is not an employee of Horizon Health Network, he does have privileges with Horizon. While these complaints do not relate to his hospital practice, we believe it is important that the public is aware of the situation and feel we have taken the appropriate measures to ensure patient safety.

With knowledge of these further charges, Horizon has restricted, for an undetermined amount of time, Dr. Cockeram's privileges to treat female patients at any of our facilities.
