New standardized scheduling system to improve staffing levels and patient care

(Horizon) April 23, 2015 - Horizon is streamlining the way it schedules employees for work. Beginning in June 2015, a staff scheduling centre in Saint John will be dedicated to staff scheduling Horizon-wide. 

Horizon currently has a large number of staff managing schedules and often complicated shift patterns using a variety of methods and tools. To ensure consistency across the organization, Horizon will move to a single staff-scheduling system to manage the work assignments of about 80 per cent of Horizon's workforce.

"The idea is to make sure we have the right staff, in the right location, at the right time to meet the current needs of the patient population," said Andrea Seymour, Horizon's Chief Operating Officer, "Transforming the way Horizon schedules staff will also mean more reliable staffing levels for our patients, resulting in better care".

In addition, the new system will allow staff to access their schedules, request time off, check on their leave balances or exchange shifts online.

The centre will be staffed gradually on a program-by-program basis using the existing workforce.

All Horizon programs will be integrated into the new system by March 2017.
